When Does an EV Battery Need Replacement and What Are the Warning Signs?

EV batteries are built to last, and EV battery replacement is usually not needed for many years. In most cases, they can run well for 10 to 20 years before needing replacement.

That doesn’t mean they stay the same forever.

Like any battery, they lose efficiency over time. Slowly. Usually without obvious signs at first.

The question isn’t when will it fail?

It’s when does the battery stop performing the way it should?

For most EV owners, battery replacement only becomes a concern when the battery drops below 70% to 80% of its original capacity

That’s usually the point where range, charging, and overall performance start feeling noticeably different.

Here’s what to look out for.

Is Your EV Losing More Range Than Usual?

A small drop in range over time is normal.

A sharp drop isn’t.

If your EV suddenly starts giving you 20% to 30% less range on a full charge than it used to, it may be a sign of battery degradation.

This is often one of the first things drivers notice.

Same routes. Same driving style. Less distance.

That’s worth paying attention to.

Is Your EV Taking Longer to Charge?

Charging times can change.

Weather affects it. Charger type affects it.

But if your EV starts taking significantly longer to charge than usual, especially up to 50% longer, it can point to battery cell imbalance or reduced battery efficiency.

Is the Battery Overheating More Often?

EV batteries generate heat. That’s normal.

Repeated overheating isn’t.

If your battery gets unusually hot during driving or charging, or if the cooling system seems to be working harder than usual, it may be a warning sign.

Heat accelerates battery wear.

And over time, that can reduce battery health faster.

Are You Seeing Battery Management System (BMS) Errors?

Your EV constantly monitors battery health through its Battery Management System.

If you start seeing repeated battery warnings, charging alerts, or system errors, don’t ignore them.

Sometimes it’s software.

Sometimes it’s not.

Repeated BMS warnings often point to deeper battery issues that need inspection.

Is There Physical Damage or a Burning Smell?

This is the most serious one.

If you notice:

  • swelling in the battery pack
  • unusual bulging
  • visible damage
  • a strong burning smell

Stop driving immediately.

These signs may indicate internal battery failure or overheating.

This isn’t something to “watch for later.”

It needs immediate attention.

Is It the Main EV Battery or Just the 12V Battery?

A lot of EV owners don’t realize their vehicle has two batteries

The Main EV Battery

This is the large battery pack that powers the motor.

It usually lasts for years and is often covered by an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty

This is the expensive one.

This is the one people usually worry about.

The 12V Battery

This works like the battery in a petrol or diesel car.

It powers:

  • lights
  • dashboard
  • accessories
  • startup systems

If your EV won’t start, or the electronics feel weak, it doesn’t always mean the main battery is failing.

Sometimes the 12V battery simply needs replacement.

That’s far more common.

When Should You Replace an EV Battery?

An EV battery usually needs replacement when:

  • battery health drops below 70%–80%
  • range drops significantly
  • charging becomes much slower
  • overheating becomes frequent
  • BMS errors keep appearing
  • there’s visible physical damage

Not every warning sign means immediate replacement.

But repeated signs shouldn’t be ignored.
